King of the carotenoids

• Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful antioxidants that nature has to offer. The substance is produced by algae, plankton and various micro-organisms. Astaxanthin falls under the carotenoids, natural dyes that are responsible for the yellow, orange and red color in vegetables and fruit.
• The richest natural source of astaxanthin is Haematococcus pluvialis, which is also called blood rain algae because of its deep red color. The animals that eat this algae also get a distinctive pink color. Think of salmon, lobster, crab, trout and shrimp. Some birds also ingest this colorant, such as the flamingo.

Important role in nature

• Algae produce astaxanthin to protect themselves from stressful conditions such as drought and sunlight in the summer. This allows the algae to protect their DNA, allowing them to grow again in better conditions.
• In addition, astaxanthin is known to help a salmon swim up to 3,000 kilometers against the current. In birds, high concentrations of astaxanthin are found in the eyes.

• For this product we have chosen AstaPure®, the most sustainable astaxanthin in the world. AstaPure® is produced under natural conditions at a GMP-certified location in the Arava desert in Israel. Thanks to the stable climate, this region has plenty of sunlight, clean air and is free of pollutants all year round. Also, due to the remote location in the desert, algae cultivation does not displace crops.

Fully sustainable production process

• The entire production takes place using solar energy. In addition, underground seawater is used during the production process, so that no drinking water is needed. This water is then recycled for 80%. The production process of AstaPure® is therefore completely sustainable.

Green and red phase

• The production takes place in two phases that mimic the accumulation of astaxanthin in nature. In the green phase, the algae enjoy optimal natural growth conditions, allowing them to grow to their maximum potential. In the red phase, the algae are exposed to harsh conditions, causing them to produce astaxanthin as a defense mechanism.

Highest purity astaxanthin

• AstaPure® is produced from the algae Haematococcus pluvialis, which contains the most concentrated natural form of astaxanthin. In combination with the production at the remote location in the Arava desert, this ensures the highest purity of astaxanthin, namely 95% of the total amount of carotenoids extracted from the algae.
