One-stop pharmacy tree: NEEM (Niem)

Take in general.

Neem (Azadirachta Indica, Niem) is the common name of a very important tree native to the Indian subcontinent, which now also grows in parts of the Middle East. The main benefits of neem leaves are said to be its ability to improve hair and scalp health, as well as to soothe irritation and protect the skin.

Neem is considered one of the most important and versatile plants in Indian culture.

What is Neem?

Neem trees are a part of the mahogany family of trees, Meliaceae. These trees grow very quickly and have wide spreading leaves, which they can quickly drop in a drought to protect the rest of the trees. This quality makes them extremely resistant to challenging environments; they are mainly found in tropical and subtropical zones. The flowers are very fragrant and white in color, while the fruit of the neem tree is a small drupe with a bittersweet pulp.

5 Benefits of Neem*

Neem leaves are highly sought after and serve as a major industry in the subcontinents – as these valuable leaves can be used for many different things. The oil from the leaves can be extracted, while the leaves themselves can be dried and used as a spice or even as a pest repellent. In many areas of India, the shoots and flowers of the tree are also used for culinary purposes.

1. Antibacterial*

Research (Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal) shows that Neem powder, oil, leaves, tea and other derivatives have strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. This plays a role both internally and externally, which is why neem is considered a general tonic for improving immunity and a simple way to support your overall health. It has also been linked to supporting various skin conditions.

2. Skin*

A 2011 study on the medicinal uses of neem suggests that its antifungal and antibacterial properties make it very popular in shampoos and scalp cleansers. This is because it can help keep your skin hydrated and get rid of dandruff while strengthening your hair.

3. Detoxifies the body*

Whether you Neem powder, paste or leaves, or consume its extracts in supplements, the active ingredients in this tree can help rid the body of toxins. I am always suspicious when a product is attributed too many positive properties and effects. Neem is supposed to be good for the hair (flakes etc.) and suddenly also good against bloating and stomach discomfort. What does Neem do at the digestive tract?

Dear Mr. Lutgard, thank you for your message!
Neem powder is derived from the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) and is commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is known for its potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties. There is scientific research into the effects of Neem powder on digestion and there are some potential benefits associated with it:

Digestive Stimulant: Neem powder can stimulate digestion by promoting the secretion of digestive enzymes, which can improve the digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Stomach Relief: It is also used for stomach complaints such as bloating, indigestion and heartburn. It can help regulate stomach acid production and restore balance in the stomach.

Detoxification: Neem powder is sometimes used as a mild laxative and can help remove waste and toxins from the digestive system.

Gut flora balance: It may also have a beneficial effect on the gut flora balance by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting harmful bacteria.

And like many superfoods: if you are feeling good on the inside, it will also show on your outside!
